PhD Project
Part of the project "The Radical Right in Germany, 1945-2000" supported by the Volkswagen Foundation

A military masculine ideal in the radical right is taken for granted. But what other roles and liberties were there for right-wing men in the second half of the 20th century? And how were images of masculinity created and enforced? How did the right react to deviations from these roles? These questions have not yet been researched in contemporary history. In my project, I will examine them using a praxeological approach.
One focus will be on male homosexuality, as it is seen as a deviation from hegemonic masculinity. And where the gender - that appears to be unquestionably given - deviates from the ideal, it can be “made to speak” (Meuser). This is shown by the lively discussions about masculinity and homosexuality surrounding Michael Kühnen in the 1980s. Furthermore, other possible roles of right-wing men, such as the role of the father, will be examined.
