Joint project
"Drifting Apart. International Institutions in Crisis and the Management of Dissociation Processes"
Funding line "cooperative excellence" at the Leibniz Association
Subproject at the ZZF Potsdam under the direction of Frank Bösch.
How do international organizations and cooperations break apart and what are the consequences for states that leave previous communities? The cooperation project "Drifting Apart" is investigating this current question. The ZZF subproject examines how international engagement with Iran has changed since the 1979 revolution. It analyzes the negotiation and enforcement of sanctions as well as the emergence of new forms of cooperation.
About the joint project "Drifting Apart. International Institutions in Crisis and the Management of Dissociation Processes":
When states drift apart from international institutions, this often leads to significant tensions between them and those states that wish to continue cooperation. These tensions can permanently strain interstate relations and lead to the solidification of competition and antagonism. Research attention to date has focused on the causes of the crisis of international institutions and the consequences for those very institutions themselves. The far-reaching consequences for relations between the states involved have received little attention so far.
The joint project Drifting Apart now focuses on these consequences. It comparatively examines the course and outcome of historical and current dissociation processes and attempts to identify factors that trigger, intensify or mitigate tensions between the states involved.
The interdisciplinary project was developed under the leadership of the Hessian Foundation for Peace and Conflict Research (HSFK) in the Leibniz Research Network "Crises in a Globalized World" and brings together four Leibniz institutes: in addition to the HSFK, the German Institute of Global and Area Studies (GIGA, Hamburg), the Institute of Contemporary History (IfZ, Munich) and the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Research (ZZF, Potsdam).
