Completed Collaborative Project: ZZF Potsdam, Bundeszentrale für politische Bildung, Deutschlandradio
Project management at the ZZF: Dr. Hans Hermann-Hertle

The events of 17 June 1953 did not only have a prehistory, but also far-reaching consequences. The website, which covers the period from April 1952 to the end of 1953, reconstructs what led to the crisis, the uprising itself and the months thereafter: It explains the causes, the course and the consequences. The texts are illustrated and supplemented by a variety of different sources: film clips, photos, original sounds from the RIAS archive, interviews with contemporary witnesses, newspaper clippings, flyers and documents from German and international archives. The website looks at the multi-faceted events and developments in various cities and towns in the GDR on the one hand, and at national and international developments related to the uprising on the other.

The website launched in 2003 and was last updated in 2013. It continues to be available as a source of information for users interested in history: www.17Juni53.de
