Thomas Nipperdey

Thomas Nipperdey (1927–1992), historian. His three-volume work „Deut­­sche Ge­schich­­te 1800–1918“ (‘German History 1800-1918’) (published 1983-1992) is considered a standard work of modern history. Nipperdey taught as a professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe from 1963 before being appointed to the Free University of Berlin in 1967. In 1971, he moved to the LMU Munich. In the 1970s, he was regarded as one of the leading modern historians and critics of the student protests. In 1993, the University of Potsdam purchased Nipperdey's 2120-volume estate library, which has since been on permanent loan to the public as a reference collection at the ZZF.
