Zeithistorische Forschungen/Studies in Contemporary History (ZF/SCH) is a peer-review journal for contemporary history research on German, European and global issues, published three times a year. The open-access version is free of charge; the print version can be subscribed to via Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. Both versions are identical in their texts and complement each other; the online version contains hyperlinks, additional audio-visual sources, digital reprint articles and other resources.

Zeithistorische Forschungen/Studies in Contemporary History targets historians and scholars of related disciplines as well as a wider public interested in questions, findings and debates of contemporary history. The journal is a platform for a great variety of subjects, perspectives and methods. Special interest is devoted to Visual History, i.e. the origins, transmissions, effects and reception patterns of audio-visual media in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In accordance with this interest, the journal explores new ways of presenting research and tries to enrich conventional methods of historiography. We encourage original research and thought-provoking interventions, written in clear academic prose.

For these purposes, the journal offers several sections and genres: alongside longer articles, there are essays, debates and interviews, interpretations of relevant sources, and exhibition reviews. The sections ‘Literature Revisited’, ‘Film & TV Revisited’, and ‘Sound Revisited’ also distinguish Zeithistorische Forschungen/Studies in Contemporary History from other academic journals.
