Dissertation project
part of the collaborative research project “Where the Rich Live: Mapping Villa Neigh-borhoods and Cultures of Wealth in Germany’s Long 20th Century (RichMap),” conducted in partnership with the IRS in Erkner
Supervision: Prof. Dr. Frank Bösch
The dissertation project analyzes East German villa neighborhoods in the 20th century. The study focuses particularly on the transformation of these neighborhoods after 1945 and again after 1989. The villa districts of Potsdam will serve as a starting point for comparison with similar neighborhoods in other selected cities, such as Dresden, Erfurt, and Leipzig.
The research aims to trace the evolution of social inequality and cultural differentiation, contributing to wealth studies in Germany. Central to the investigation is the question of how the social structure of the neighborhoods and the lived realities or lifestyles of villa residents changed between 1945 and the 1990s.
