›Refugees‹ and Others: The Production of Refugee-Related Figures since the 1970s

Collaborative project
Funding period: April 2024 – December 2027
Head of research: Isabella Löhr (ZZF Potsdam) and Jochen Oltmer (Osnabrück University)

As part of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center / SFB 1604 “Production of Migration”  the project investigates the semantic and socio- political emergence of the figure of the refugee in German-speaking countries since the 1970s. To this end, it combines statistical analysis of large text corpora with qualitative historical research. The aim is to trace the contested negotiation of refugee-related figures and to understand how the emergence of these figures was used to produce a particular knowledge on migration that served to enhance social processes of closure or opening.
