The border area of the GDR in Potsdam 1961-1989
The area between Glienicke Bridge and Cecilienhof in the New Garden is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Potsdam. Only a few remnants of the barriers remain that once were part of the Berlin Wall, which divided the GDR from West Berlin until 1990; this area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The open-air exhibition, with its eight information steles along the former Potsdam border strip, opened in April 2019. It stretches from Glienicke Bridge up to Bertinistraße, where a central border crossing for shipping traffic between East and West was located between 1965 and 1990. The project was carried out by the Leibniz Centre for Contemporary History Potsdam in cooperation with Erinnerungsorte Potsdamer Grenze e.V. and was completed in April 2019. The project was led by ZZF Director Prof. Frank Bösch.
A website was also created as part of the project. There you will find even more information about the places marked by the information steles in the open-air exhibition. There are also images and audio and video materials about the former border area in German and English, as well as an interactive map.
