Tensions have systematically arisen when religious practices deemed alien to Christian/secular Europe have made their presence felt in the cityscapes of the continent. All individuals and groups use both clothing and the built environment to constitute their social selves; clothing and both dwellings and sites of worship are also often crucial to spiritual practice. All, therefore, intrude on the eyes of their neighbors whether in their personal appearance or that of the buildings they erect or modify. In the last twenty years, during moments of acute conflict, both the “other” and the “native” have had recourse to both national and supranational courts to defend what they perceive to be their rights. This talk will explore conflicts in contemporary Europe between Jews and Muslims on the one hand and their neighbors, politicians in the places they call home, and national and European courts, on the other. In contrast to most work on these issues, which focus either on clothing or on the built environment, I will argue here that melding those analyses will deepen our understanding of the stakes of these conflicts.

Der Vortrag eröffnet die Konferenz "Shifting Modes of Inclusion and Belonging" der Universität Potsdam (27. - 29. Oktober 2011).
