Success and agency in biographical interviews and quantitative data
Aspect of success and developing the question of agency and turning points of lives
The last decades brought important changes for Polish society. Political and economic transitions that occurred after 1989 had a large impact on people’s believes and attitudes. Together with my colleagues (Danuta Życzyńska-Ciołek and Marta Mieszczanek) I examine the changes of perception of success during that time reflected in two types of longitudinal data: quantitative - coming from a long-term panel survey, and qualitative – coming from unstructured interviews.
The benefits of compiling such different types of data are best seen in those situations in which quantitative and qualitative data are complementary for each other. It is the case of Polish Panel Survey POLPAN, conducted since 1988, and biographical interviews recently conducted with this study’s eldest panel respondents.
This project goals are twofold: both substantive and methodological. We aim to determine how the perception of success determinants present in the survey data is reflected in biographical interviews. At the same time we also analyse the difficulties and benefits resulting from combining two different types of longitudinal data.
