Evening Programme

The evening event “The Future of European Heritage - National Identities, Inauthentic Europe?“ will focus on the way in which the retreat to the nation-state has changed the image of Europe in national histories and how this is echoed in museums and memorials. Are national traditions and identities increasing in popularity while Europe and the European idea as a whole are perceived as “inauthentic” and too detached from everyday life?

In the framework of the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 “Sharing Heritage”, we would like to turn our attention towards traditions and values shared throughout Europe today. We also aim to examine the way in which museums and memorials reflect and present the European idea and the increasingly interwoven nature of European relations. To support cultural participation in Europe, it is particularly important at this juncture in time to politically and financially promote European cultural heritage and reflection upon it by scholars in the field of history and cultural studies.
