News from Germany: Creating Global Media Networks in the Twentieth Century
News from Germany: Creating Global Media Networks in the Twentieth Century Scholars have often taken newspapers for granted as accessible sources of information, but the historical creation of news actually formed a highly contested arena of globalization. News became an integral method to influence society at home and to reconfigure political and economic constellations abroad. For Germans in particular, news production became a means not only to control information, but also to influence broader political, economic, and social expectations. My current book project explores why the control of news became so important for German elites in the first half of the twentieth century and how German interventions in global communications enabled them to seize a commanding position in the international information order that emerged between the two world wars.
