Attention! Border area. The restricted zone in the GDR, Potsdam 1961-89

Completed Collaborative project between the ZZF and the association Memorial Sites at the Potsdam Border

Project coordination: Prof. Dr. Frank Bösch, Dr. Hans-Hermann Hertle, Prof. Dipl.-Ing. Jan Fiebelkorn-Drasen
Project management: Florentine Schmidtmann, M.A.

The course of the former border to the north of Glienicker Bridge counts today among the most visited sections of the Berlin-Brandenburg Wall, the former ‘outer ring’ of Berlin. Since the demolition of the Berlin Wall in the early 1990s, however, there is not a single reference at this section, which stretches for miles and is today idyllic, to the period of the GDR and the former death strip, with the exception of short passages of text on a sign about Glienicker Bridge and two memorial posts for victims of the Berlin Wall in its immediate vicinity on Schwanenallee. The ZZF, together with the association ‘Memorial Sites at the Potsdam Border’ is pursued the aim of developing for the period from 1945 to 1990 a professionally sound documentation on this section of the outer ring of Berlin, which is of historical importance and likewise highly interesting for the public. The result of the project shoud be, for one thing, an exhibition concept for eight to ten bilingual outdoor posts, which are to be erected on the riverside path in 2018; for another thing, the border regime and everyday life at the border should be documented in publications.

Project results:
Open Air Exibition - Outline map - infopad (graphic proof: Soner Ipekcioglu_Agentur The composers)
Read here the report ( in german) by Marion Schlöttke about the exhibition opening.
Since November 9, 2018, the Internet portal www.grenze-potsdam.de has been activated. It offers users in-depth information as well as image, audio and video material about the former border area in German and English.
