Between Arts and Crafts: Soviet Modernization of the Art Industry, 1932-1965
During my stay at ZZF, I continue working on my dissertation project. The dissertation aims to rethink Soviet “folk artistic crafts” as a cultural project designed for advertising the socialist system through material objects both domestically and internationally. While focusing on the evolution of ideas and practices in supervising artistic crafts, the project examines the Soviet crafts policy as a part of a greater framework for handling of the material environment of the Socialist state. In my project, I explore the activities of the Scientific Research Institute of Art Industries, which supervised contracted workshops in different regions of the Soviet Union. Currently, I am working on the chapter on folk artistic crafts as a means of cultural diplomacy and analysing the practices of gift-giving and displaying crafts during international exhibitions.
