Reception and impact of plurimedial history images
In his bestselling 1955 novel Through the Night, Hans Scholz depicted the execution of Jews that occurred in 1941 near the Belarussian city of Orsha. Radio and television adaptations of the book soon followed. Despite their enormous popularity, the book, radio play and television series have failed to become a political issue. The project analyses Through the Night as a ‘plurimedial’ work and focuses on its reception among professional critics and private viewers while exploring the work’s contribution to historical discourse in 1950s and 1960s West Germany. The aim of the project is to elaborate on the concept of plurimedial history images as well as to improve methods of historical reception studies.
