Identities in Conflict: Queer and LGBT-Led Humanitarian Responses to Refugees from Syria in Berlin and Beirut
This project explores the reception of LGBTQI+ refugees from Syria by humanitarian and queer-led actors and organisations in Berlin and Beirut. In so doing, this will account for the roles played by queer-led organisations as humanitarian actors, as well as their interactions with diverse state-level, legal, international and formal humanitarian institutions and structures. This multi-sited approach aims to challenge prevailing assumptions about Europe's more ’tolerant’ stance toward sexual difference, in contrast to a more homophobic Middle East, by considering how queer-led organisations navigate intersecting social, racial and cultural processes of inclusion/exclusion in both sites. Finally, this project aims to examine how diverse responses - including humanitarian service provision and refugee integration - challenge and/or maintain sexual and gendered norms and identities.
